Lithium build up in the anodes of a lithium-ion battery is known to have a negative effect on its charge capacity, now a study from Ohio State University has found that lithium also accumulates on the battery’s copper current collector. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable batteries that are used in hybrid and electric vehicles. Read more…

World Bank approves $50 million forest investment for Ghana

An organic coloring from a plant used to create dye for textiles can be turned into a highly effective, natural cathode for lithium-ion batteries. Scientists at Rice University and the City College of New York have found that the madder plant or Rubia tinctorum can produce purpurin, an organic molecule that can electrochemically interact with lithium and bind lithium ions. Read more…

Blue Sphere gets approval for Ghanaian waste-to-energy...

Blue Sphere gets approval for Ghanaian waste-to-energy project

Done with batteries and the environment in mind

We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

Organic solar cells use conductive organic polymers to convert sunlight to an electric charge. Flexible and lightweight, they open themselves up to a variety of possible applications including building integrated photovoltaics. Read more…

The goal is to add 20 gigawatts of grid connected and 2 GW of off-grid solar capacity by 2022. Read more…

G.E. closes deals for wind projects in Brazil, Kansas
