Larger blades help boost U.S.’s wind power output

Energy generated from wind turbines in the United States has grown 27 percent over last year, with bigger blades being instrumental in the growth, a report from the Department of Energy said. The report noted the disparity in size of today’s blades with those in the 1980’s, which now measure over 150 feet (45.72 meters) compared with only 65 feet (19.81 meters) previously.

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas will sell its tower factory in Varde, Denmark to China’s biggest manufacturer of wind turbines Titan Wind Energy Co., Ltd. In January 2012, Vestas announced plans to close the factory, but the negotiation with Titan Wind Energy, which is a long-term partner and supplier to the company, resulted to a change in its decision.

Germany’s Siemens A.G. said it just entered the Thai wind market with turbine orders for two wind power plants in Northeastern Thailand with a combined capacity of about 200 megawatts.

North Carolina-based utility Duke Energy got an agreement for global industrial powerhouses Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to supply wind turbines to a two-phase project in Texas.

Some believe that wind turbines are dangerous to birds and bats by attracting insects with the common white and gray turbine blades. It is possible that by changing the color to purple, turbines could be far less threatening to our winged friends. I’d like to point out that purple would blend in with blue skies better and honestly might just look cooler.
